Wildwood Middle School Lockdown: Bomb Threat Prompts Major Police Response in Jefferson County
Wildwood Middle School and nearby Jefferson High School were placed under lockdown Wednesday morning after a threatening call reported bombs and an armed suspect on school grounds, triggering a large-scale emergency response.
According to Jefferson County Sheriff Tom Hansen, the call came in at 10:19 a.m., with the caller claiming that explosives had been placed around the outside of the school and that an individual armed with an AR-15 was present, warning that the school should be evacuated within 15 minutes.
Law enforcement immediately responded with a full tactical deployment, securing the area and establishing a perimeter of nearly one mile to prevent access in or out of the affected zone. Both Wildwood Middle School and Jefferson High School were placed on lockdown as a precaution.
Authorities reported that officers from multiple local and federal agencies assisted in the response. Police systematically cleared parking lots and surrounding exterior areas at both schools to ensure no immediate danger was present. Officials emphasized that all actions were carried out with urgency given the severity of the threat.
Parents were notified via text and email and instructed not to travel to the schools. Instead, reunification was organized at nearby Sam Michael Park, where students were transported by school buses after the campuses were secured and cleared.
Sheriff Hansen confirmed that no explosives were found and no armed suspect was located. However, he stressed that all threats are treated as credible until proven otherwise. At this stage, no suspects have been identified, and the investigation remains ongoing with federal agencies assisting local authorities.
The incident required the evacuation and securing of approximately 420 students and 55 staff members. Officials confirmed that no injuries occurred and that all individuals were safely accounted for.
Jefferson County School Superintendent Dr. Chuck Bishop credited prior emergency preparedness drills for helping the response run smoothly, noting that a recent simulation closely mirrored the day’s events and proved highly beneficial during the real incident.
Authorities continue to investigate the origin of the threatening call.
