Latrell Ballard Airlifted Mecklenburg County, VA Accident Death: In Loving Memory

Authorities are investigating a serious crash following a high-speed police pursuit that ended with a vehicle overturning multiple times and its driver being critically injured.

The incident occurred on the afternoon of April 27, 2026, involving Latrell Ballard of Portsmouth, Virginia, who was airlifted to a regional trauma center following the crash.

According to the Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office, a deputy attempted to stop a black Chevrolet sedan traveling westbound on Highway 58 between Baskerville Road and Wooden Bridge Road after it was allegedly observed speeding. The driver did not stop, instead fleeing and prompting a police pursuit.

Officials say the vehicle continued at high speed during the chase, with deputies reporting erratic driving, including sudden lane changes and weaving through traffic. Law enforcement continued the pursuit while attempting to minimize risks to the public.

The pursuit ended near Ghee Williams Drive when the driver lost control of the vehicle. The car left the roadway, struck an embankment, became airborne, and overturned multiple times before coming to rest off the road.

Deputies and emergency responders arrived to find Ballard trapped inside the heavily damaged vehicle. Officers reportedly used a fire extinguisher to suppress flames coming from the engine area before firefighters and EMS teams took over.

Emergency crews provided critical care at the scene before Ballard was airlifted to a regional hospital. His current condition has not been released.

Virginia State Police have taken over the investigation, which is standard procedure in pursuit-related crashes. Authorities are reviewing the initial traffic stop attempt, the events of the pursuit, and road conditions to determine the full sequence of events.
