Adonis Joseph Shooting Elkhart, IN Death: Former South Bend Police Officer Identified As The Shooter
Adonis Joseph Shooting Elkhart, IN Suicide Death Obituary: Former South Bend police officer and U.S. Army veteran Adonis Joseph has been identified as the gunman in a deadly shooting in Elkhart on Monday.
Investigators say Joseph was later found dead from what appeared to be a self‑inflicted gunshot wound inside his burning apartment on Golden Pond Trail. His death occurred shortly after police responded to reports of a double shooting at The Highlands Apartments on the city’s north side.
According to authorities, multiple 911 callers reported gunfire, prompting officers to arrive at a residence on Links Drive around 1:54 p.m. Inside, they found two victims. Joseph’s ex‑wife, Candace, was suffering from gunshot wounds and was taken to a hospital in serious condition. Her boyfriend was also discovered inside the home and was pronounced dead at the scene.
After the shooting, Joseph reportedly returned to his nearby apartment, where a fire later broke out. Fire crews from several departments—including Cleveland Township, Elkhart City, Osolo Township, and Baugo Township—responded to the blaze. Officials believe Joseph died inside the apartment from a self‑inflicted gunshot wound.
Because of the severity of the situation and concerns about public safety, regional SWAT teams and additional emergency units were deployed. Nearby schools, including Horizon Elementary and Discovery Middle School, were temporarily placed on lockdown due to connections between the families involved. The lockdown was lifted once authorities determined the area was secure.
